In A Dream

Not a huge Hodgy Beats/Odd Future fan but this song's sample kills it

The Full Retard

El-P is a trip. White dude from Brooklyn, been around the underground scene for a long time. El-Producto was the founder of the Def Jux (Definitive Juxtaposition) record label which has spawned artists like Aesop Rock, Del, MURS, RJD2, etc etc etc. Needless to say, he's been a behind the scenes driving force for the progression of alternative hip-hop. Much of his music is dark, industrial, and often difficult to approach, which is to say that much of it isn't particularly pleasant upon first listen. He goes beyond simple hip-hop and makes his music more of an artistic expression with no boundaries. His album I'll Sleep When You're Dead was dropped when I was a junior in college and I remember playing it for a lot of people and most of them didn't 'get' it. His new cut The Full Retard is one of the more approachable songs he's dropped, while still maintaining his illusionary, macabre style for which he's known. Let's see if you get it or not. Throwing in an old cut too to show his knack for bending genres and expectations.

Triscuits

A remix-ish version of Keith Sweat's Twisted named after my favorite snack cracker? Ummmm no way can this not be dope. (old version stopped working, this one is working again.)

YG

I've always thought that YG was a pretty shitty rapper, and I still do. That's not to say that he doesn't make good songs though. Take, for example, his first single Toot It and Boot It (surely you've heard it). Catchy beat, catchier chorus, and awful fucking raps. But the same thing that initially turned me off about YG is why I now consider him to be special: his songs present themselves in a fun, carefree way that makes the listener give much less of a shit what the verses consist of. I almost overlooked this mixtape as I had pretty much written him off.  This, however, has ended up being one of my favorite mixtapes of the year thus far.  More Ratchet music for chore azz. Seriously don't sleep on this.

Stay ratchet.

Problem

So I'm back, gonna seriously try to stay on it this time.  I figure it'll be easier if I break each song/mixtape/artist into it's own post.  That way I'll be more likely to update them regularly and you won't have retardedly long posts to read and everybody's fucking happy.

So let's start with Problem.  Dude is out of LA and is, in my humble opinion, hard as fuck, or at least his music is.  Super heavy bass (don't listen to this on laptop speakers) with slurred swagger raps, a little chopping/a little bit of south added to the typical LA sound.  Dudes are calling it Ratchet music, along with Tyga, YG, and the likes.  I digs.
